Reengineered insertion mag flow meter 8045 - with selection guide!
Introducing the reengineered type 8045 insertion mag flow meter.
This article discusses product attributes of the 8045, and provides a guide as to where an insertion mag flow meter will give significant cost, installation, and service benefits over the traditional full-bore style mag flow meter.

Introducing the proven, but reengineered, insertion-style electromagnetic flow meter Type 8045. These flow meters operate under the same principle as the more common full-bore electromagnetic flow meter, including local or remote display, with totalisers and outputs, as well as a new digital input to allow reset, hold, and other functionality. This product article includes a guide to suitable insertion mag flow meter applications, where you can save significant time and money, versus using the full-bore type flow meters.
Electromagnetic flow meters, or mag flow meters, are used where the process media has small or large particulate content, and there is inconsistent, aggressive or challenging liquid media content - eg, sea water or brine applications. Mag flow meters are highly accurate, robust, and versatile for measuring most process media.
INTRODUCING THE REENGINEERED 8045 INSERTION MAG FLOW METER
Bürkert's 8045 insertion mag flow meter is an all-purpose unit with no moving parts, and IP65 lockable self-enclosure, making it suitable for demanding environments. Its reengineering was to improve existing PCB and display based features, expanding options in accordance with evolving industrial technologies. Use-based benefits of the 8045 include automatic calibration and output signal simulation, plus versatility in programming. The reengineered unit expands on this, with optimisations including a new adjustable backlit display for reading and programming in dim conditions. Newly integrated diagnostics further support local operation, with a simple and conspicuous green / orange / red LED status indication. Type 8045 now offers a cut-off feature, designed to optimise use in low flow applications. This function allows the operator to set a lower limit, under which the measurement value is set as zero. This parameter feeds through to display, totalisers, outputs and downstream process conditions.
A digital input added to the 8045 electromagnetic flow meter, menu-configured, has been also included. This allows control system initiated reset of totalising functions, HOLD mode go-to, zero-point calibration, and other functions. This feature has been added to facilitate remote control capabilities, via site control systems and newly available cloud-based and remote monitoring technologies. The extension of remote monitoring and control functionality in the 8045 magnetic flow meter reflects wider Bürkert trends to utilise expanding mobile technologies for simple and cost effective process monitoring.
PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS OF THE 8045 INSERTION MAG FLOW METER
The flow meter is suitable for pipe diameters DN6 .. 400mm and flow velocities of 0.2 .. 10m/sec (volumes 0.02 .. 4500m3 per hour). A wide range of process conditions is catered to with the Type 8045, as it is suitable for media -15°C .. 110°C and up to 16 bar pressure. The flow meter has a backlit display, push-button keypad, and is equipped with a 4... 20 mA current output, a digital output (pulse output by default), and two totalisers. Versions with combinations of up to two relay outputs and one digital input are within the standard offering. The complete Bürkert offering includes a stainless steel (standard), PVDF, or C22 alloy sensor finger, as well as T-piece and rise style fluidic adaptors for connection with any style of pipework from one partner in process control.
The main non-commercial constraint on use of mag flow meters is that the process media be conductive for the sensors to operate, measuring >20µs for insertion type mag flow meters. This is because the sensor operates by introducing a magnetic field into the process media to measure voltage produced between the sensor points. Electromagnetic flow meters use the principles of Faraday's law with proportional mathematical algorithms to derive flow rate and flow volume from changing voltage readings.
WHERE TO USE AN INSERTION MAG FLOW METER
Commercial concerns with mag flow meters relate to their relative expense to other styles of flow meter. However where a mag flow meter is required, Bürkert's insertion mag flow meter Type 8045 offers an alternative to the full-bore model for most common mag flow meter applications. Where the full-bore mag flow meter relies on replacing a portion of pipework with a fluidic fitting integrating sensor points in its wall, the insertion type unit has a sensor finger (available in short and long sizes) that protrudes directly into the process media. Where suitable, the insertion mag flow meter delivers considerable cost savings, installation efficiencies, and maintenance simplicity.
Applications where the Insertion mag flow meter is frequently an ideal choice are those where the extreme accuracy of full-bore mag flow meters (typically 0.5%) is overkill and the 2% accuracy of the insertion mag flow will suffice. Further, appropriate applications must have pipe bore is less than 400mm, and particulate contamination sufficiently small not to physically destroy the sensor finger - this means where rocks are within the flow and travelling at higher velocity, the full bore type flow meter (also offered by Bürkert) may be indicated.
Typical applications that suit insertion type mag flow meters include:
- Well and river water pump monitoring (irrigation)
- Farming and irrigation water use monitoring
- Water use monitoring in process industry applications
- Flocculent dosing (makeup)
- Water balancing (water treatment plants)
- Intake water monitoring (water treatment plants)
- Discharge water monitoring
In such suitable applications insertion mag flow meters, for example Bürkert's Type 8045, offer significant benefits with hardware savings alone reaching 75% on larger sized pipes.
Specific benefits to using the insertion type mag flow meter in preference to the full-bore style include:
- Always the same instrument and electronics
- Simple installation, no flanges
- Weld on fitting or tapping band through the pipe
- Low weight; no support or brackets required
- Simple removal for inspection and cleaning
- Highly reliable and robust with minimal maintenance needs
- May be used with all types of piping (stainless steel, cement lined, plastic)
